Cast off at Caragh Lake
Fishing in Kerry doesn’t get much better than Caragh Lake, just a few minutes’ drive from The Glenbeigh Hotel in the heart of The Reeks District.
The Upper Caragh River is considered one of the best salmon rivers in Ireland, getting a run of around 300 salmon a year. It has 7 beats, all of which are private to the individual angler. Caragh Lake and River system also holds a large stock of wild Brown Trout with Sea Trout fishing at the lower end. Its waters are some of the purest in Europe, making it a fisherman’s dream.
Before you begin a day fishing on Caragh Lake, tuck into our hearty breakfast! We can arrange our guide Mike O Shea – Upper Caragh Fisheries to meet you at The Glenbeigh Hotel or you can make your way to Upper Caragh Fisheries in your own time. Mike is an experienced and knowledgeable fisherman and guide with a wealth of information on the local Kerry area and best fishing spots on the lake.
He has access to a tackle shop where rods, reels and flies can be hired and the fishery also has 15 boats and motors for hire too. All you need to do is get there.
Once you leave the hotel, travel towards the boathouse at Blackstones Bridge, a stunning part of the Reeks District with breathtaking 360 degree views. From the boathouse, hop into the boat and travel down the crystal clear channel to begin your day fishing on Caragh Lake. Make sure to take in views of The Windy Gap to the left and Carrauntoohil, Ireland Highest Mountain to your right.
At lunch time pull onshore for an hour where Mike can start the fire and you can cook up a storm or if you prefer we can arrange a packed lunch for you. While we encourage catch and release, Mike our guide can arrange for your catch to be professionally smoked for you if you wish.
After a full day fishing on the lake, return to The Glenbeigh Hotel and recharge the batteries. Dine with us in our Award Winning Gastrobar, our bar food menu is served from 12.30pm to 9pm with some delicious daily specials, enjoy a pint by the fire and maybe a sing song on the piano or we can also arrange dinner with a view at the award winning Jacks Coastguard Restaurant in the seaside village of Cromane just 5 minutes from the hotel.
